Future Farmers of America Efforts Taking Off at Muhammad Ali International Airport (SDF)

May 16, 2019 | Louisville, Kentucky: Klausing Group today announced the completion of a collaborative project including Jefferson and Franklin County public high school students and Klausing Group. The project resulted in the planting of summer flowers at Muhammad Ali International Airport (SDF) (MAIA(SDF)). This collaboration is a part of Klausing Group’s efforts to cultivate the next generation of leaders in the landscape industry. Students from Seneca High School’s FFA program joined Klausing Group staff at MAIA(SDF) for instruction and training on job site safety, standard operating procedures, and horticultural best practices, before working together to plant the airport’s summer color beds. The flowers planted, wax begonias, were purchased from Franklin County FFA students who grew the flowers in their school’s greenhouse as a part of their curriculum. Proceeds from the sale go towards funding the program.

“With our goal of introducing the next generation of landscapers to our industry, cooperation with FFA is a no-brainer. The Seneca students get real-world experience, a chance to see what they have learned in the abstract taking shape on the ground,” says Don Lewis, Grounds Management Division Head at Klausing Group.

“Klausing Group’s slogan may be ‘Planting Ideas’, but our primary effort is ‘cultivating future leaders’. Our strength is our people, and any company in any industry wins because it has hardworking, bright, and motivated personnel,” said Whitney Baker, Account Manager at Klausing Group.

This project’s completion comes in the wake of many recent initiatives and accomplishments of the company, including:

  • Increasing the number of part-time positions available to high school and college students
  • Offering a Department of Labor approved apprenticeship program
  • Achieving Landscape Industry Accreditation by the National Association of Landscape Professionals

“Students at Seneca High School were super excited to apply course studies to the real world, and excited to work with plants their peers had grown. They loved contributing to the community,” says Beth Mattingly, Seneca High School’s FFA Coordinator.
