Klausing Group hosts Kentucky Association of Environmental Education Members

Kentucky Association of Environmental EducationWe’re proud of the work we do and whenever we get a chance to show it off, we’re happy to oblige. This week’s opportunity came by way of the Kentucky Association of Environmental Education (KAEE) who was hosting their annual conference in Lexington.

Doug McLaren, University of Kentucky Area Extension Specialist (and my father-in-law), contacted me earlier this year and suggested that the green infrastructure projects we had undertaken at our Lexington office would serve as great examples of “sustainability in action,” a focus of this year’s KAEE Annual Conference. Because education is one of Klausing Group’s three core values, we jumped at opportunity to exchange information with environmental educators and share our experiences constructing and maintaining green infrastructure projects.

About 35 attendees, including college professors, high school instructors, career counselors, and extension agents were treated to a tour of our six green infrastructure projects including permeable parking lots, rain gardens, a vegetated roof, a Monarch Waystation, a water quality unit, and a rainwater harvesting system. A highlight for many was the opportunity to view a vegetated roof from above made possible by the scissor lift rented for the occasion.

The two hour event was a huge success and wouldn’t have been possible without the efforts and energy of Dan Stever and Stephen Broyles. Dan Stever, always an excellent speaker and educator, engaged the group and made the experience fun and exciting. Stephen Broyles, who not only helped to construct three of the green infrastructure projects, also served as a proud tour guide who was able to share his hands-on experience with the projects. We love showing off our work and we love to educate others about the benefits, both environmental and social, of the work we do. If you or an organization you are involved with would be interested in a site tour, don’t hesitate to contact us. We’d be more than happy to host.
